This tee honours one of the most powerful statements in Aotearoa’s history - “Not one more acre” words that came to symbolise Dame Whina Cooper’s unwavering stand for whenua, whakapapa, and future generations.
The artwork featured on this tee was commissioned and created by Toru Whā, whose practice is grounded in mātauranga Māori and storytelling through contemporary Māori design. The piece is a deeply considered landscape composition inspired by Panguru, Dame Whina Cooper’s home, woven with layered symbolism that reflects her life, leadership, and enduring legacy.
This tee is more than a garment. It is a kōrero carried forward honouring the past, grounding the present, and protecting the future.
Artwork by Toru Whā.

Design Whakamārama
At the centre stands Te Rā the sun representing Dame Whina Cooper herself as a guiding light whose pūrākau continues to illuminate the path forward. The arch of Te Rā is adorned with rauponga whakarare, symbolising balance, harmony, and kotahitanga.
Te Maunga o Panguru rises with strength and resilience, embodying steadfast commitment to values that cannot be shaken. Wrapped around the whenua is the “Not One More Acre” pou, cradled by a double-headed manaia a guardian form representing protection, ancestral connection, and the ongoing responsibility we hold to our tūpuna. The year of the 1975 Land March is marked to honour this defining moment in history.
In the foreground, two smaller maunga adorned with pītau bulbs symbolise the next generation the continuation of Dame Whina’s mahi through our tamariki and mokopuna. Flowing beneath them, the wai is formed with koru, illustrating the ripple effects of her leadership. Mangōpare patterns within the water reflect her wairua resilience, courage, and determination.
