Meet Amber Smith - The artist behind our prints

Writer: Whina CooperWhina Cooper

Amber Smith is a multi-media artist whose work beautifully blends intricate Māori designs with a deep appreciation for Te Reo Māori and whakataukī (Māori proverbs). Originally a painter, her creative journey led her to pottery as a way to support her family while working from home. Over time, the striking imagery she carved into clay evolved into the unique prints we are proud to feature.

Each print begins as a handcrafted ceramic piece, where Amber etches her designs using the sgraffito technique—carefully scratching through layers of clay to reveal the patterns beneath. She then photographs these works and digitally enhances them to create the final print, allowing for more intricate compositions than ceramics alone would allow.

Through her work, she celebrates Te Reo Māori, incorporating words and proverbs that hold meaning and significance. This passion began when she recognised the importance of representation in her own family and sought to share the beauty of the language through her art.

Her process is slow and intentional—each design is meticulously hand-drawn to fit the shape of the original ceramic form. There are no moulds, stamps, or shortcuts; every piece carries the energy of her craftsmanship. The result is artwork that feels alive, with birds that seem to take flight and patterns that flow organically.

Amber’s dedication to her craft and cultural storytelling makes her work truly special. We are honored to collaborate with her and bring her stunning prints to you.
